Join Lakewood School District and the Lakewood/Smokey Point Public Library this summer in reading The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt. Choose online or in-person discussion groups, where we will discuss the implications of smart phones in the lives of today’s youth. If you picked up an issue of the Everett Herald on Saturday, you may have spotted something special: persuasive essays written by students from Lakewood Middle School! Students in John Johansen's ELA classes wrote the articles with coaching help from guest mentor Jon Bauer, who visited ELA classes to help students strengthen their writing and build compelling arguments.

In her article, eighth grader Nevaeh Holm emphasizes that the rights enshrined in the First Amendment belong to students, as well as adults. "When students feel like they are heard, they will want to be at school, and they will help make the country a better place,” Holm writes.

Students from across our district—elementary, middle, and high school—share the impact of their work this year in Cougar Cabinet: their growth as leaders and the meaningful changes they helped bring to their schools.

What they'll remember: student-led initiatives like Cougar Cleanup Crew, Belonging Advisory, Cougar Cash, and attendance campaigns. Favorite memories include scavenger hunts, food tastings and team challenges.

A therapy dog lets a student pat his head

Therapy dog Preacher knows just how to help students — and adults — feel calm and supported. He quietly stands by, welcoming gentle pets of his soft, furry coat.

Preacher and Linda, his human, visited the Lakewood Middle School Comprehensive Skills Program and students learned how to safely interact with dogs they might meet in their neighborhoods, building confidence and an important life skill.
